Egg supply still tight with no short term improvement anticipated

Supply of eggs into all sectors of the UK market is incredibly challenging at present.

Over and above the higher cost of production and distribution, the sector is facing a catastrophic avian flu crisis, with the result in a reduction in laying flock. Prices have risen significantly over recent weeks on very tight supplies.

All major farmers and wholesalers are struggling for product, with orders into customers being left unfulfilled.

Major retailers have started to ration supply and it is not anticipated that the position will improve for many weeks, with a normalisation of supply not expected until mid-spring at the earliest.

Should the government instruction to house all birds in barns not be lifted before the end of February, which is in doubt, then there will be no free-range eggs available from the UK market, unless special dispensation is given.
